Getting the Best Out Of England (Outside of London)

In no way would it be difficult to argue that London is the most exciting city in the world. New York boasts five boroughs, Broadway, and the Empire State Building; London sports 32 boroughs, the West End theatre district, Big Ben, the London Eye, Buckingham Palace, and more… Most major cities have a metro system, but London has “The Tube.”

But wait, this article isn’t about London, the quintessentially English “centre of the universe.”

This article is going to suggest that you check out one of England’s other fantastic cities, many of which are hidden in long, deep shadow of London.

Manchester

What’s not to like about Manchester? This hip city was the birthplace of Oasis, and is currently home to two of the world’s most popular soccer (football) clubs; Manchester United and Manchester City. Other than a football match and alternative music, the city is quite an affordable alternative to London, with food, transport, and accommodation all costing considerably less than in foggy London town. Manchester offers fantastic museums, libraries, cathedrals, and more at a comfortably urban pace.

Bristol

Bristol is a reasonably small, artistic, and cultural hub of a university town. There is an iconic suspension bridge, and lots of amazing Victorian architecture. The food is affordable and there always seems to be interesting galleries and concerts popping up all over town. Bristol was once a prominent port city, and the 19th century harbour infrastructure culture has been brought into the city’s current identity. Take a tour, or just keep your eyes open for the works of world-famous graffiti artist Banksy, who has called Bristol home for some time.

Bath

Not far from Bristol is Bath. Bath is nearly 2000 years old at this point, as it was once a spa city for the Romans and the Georgians. It is England’s longest-running and most classic tourist destination, and is truly a unique city within the United Kingdom. The entire city is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The city has impressive tourism infrastructure and surely won’t leave you disappointed should you choose to pass through.

Liverpool

Working class Liverpool is perhaps best known for being the home of The Beatles, and the city has certainly invested in this historical truth as a point of pride and key feature of their identity. It is certainly a major city at this point, and was even given the title of Europe’s “Capital of Culture” as recently as 2008. Don’t miss the Pier Head Waterfront, which is gritty and authentic, and holds the designation of being a UNESCO World Heritage site, as do several other parts of the city. Liverpool is also home to Europe’s oldest Chinatown, and a beautiful Georgian quarter.

Brighton

Sussex’s charming seaside town is England’s best bet for a satisfying beach getaway. The culture is warm and open, and the city manages to be both Victorian and laid back. Brighton is fill to the brim with charming attractions, many of which are on the waterfront. Brighton is home to some of the UK’s biggest and best festivals, and has a vibrant, positive, and wonderful feel.

Conclusion
